RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, is the latest technology used in libraries to streamline the check in/out process, shelf management, and anti-theft detection. Instead of the electro-mechanical and radio frequency systems that have been used for decades, RFID technology utilizes microchips in tags affixed to library materials to identify materials without needing to scan the barcodes, making the check-in and check-out processes significantly simpler and more efficient for both patrons and staff. In addition to the RFID tags’ high reliability and long tag life, this technology allows library staff to inventory the collection at high-speed, since items will no longer need to be removed from the shelf to be scanned.

Altadena Library is excited to welcome this new technology and join the thousands of libraries across the country that are enjoying its numerous benefits. Starting in August 2018, library staff began installing the RFID tags at the Bob Lucas Branch then at the Main Library. Each item in both libraries’ collections needed to be individually tagged with the new RFID microchips.

After months of detailed preparation, the new check-out system is expected to be available to the public starting Monday, May 6!

How Does the New Self-Checkout System Work?

The checkout system at the Bob Lucas Branch will not change for patrons. The following only applies to the Main Library’s self-checkout stations.

  1. Bring the items you wish to checkout to the self-checkout terminals by the main entrance or in the Children’s section.
  2. Scan your library card as directed on the machine’s screen, or use the touch screen to click “Manual Entry” to manually enter your card number. (Your name should appear in the upper right corner once your library card is scanned or entered.)
  3. Then simply place the items you wish to check out on the black pad in front of the machine. A list of your items will appear on the screen with green check marks beside each item name. This means they have been successfully checked out to you!
  4. Follow the directions on the screen to unlock any DVDs you checked out (yes, you can now unlock your checked out DVDs in the machine!) or print your receipt. It’s that easy!

If you encounter any issues or need staff assistance, there is a “Request Help” button along the bottom of the touch screen that will turn your self-checkout terminal’s light red and alert library staff who will happily assist you!
