Bob Lucas: The Man Whose Vision Shaped West Altadena
Robert “Bob” Lucas, the man after whom the Bob Lucas Memorial Branch Library is named, understood the enormous influence and power of the written word. A resident of Altadena in 1971, Bob was very much aware of the need for a library on the west side of Altadena, especially for the young people of the community and for those unable to travel to the main branch. He understood that being able to read and comprehend are vital skills that everyone needs. This led him to advocate and strongly encourage the library board to re-open the site at Ventura and Lincoln. He hoped that through making books, literature and literacy skills training more available, others would learn how personal freedom could be achieved through reading.
The Bob Lucas Memorial Library & Literacy Center continues to remind and inspire us all to meet the challenges for the fight for literacy and education in our community.
