Altadena is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, CA, located north of Pasadena in the San Gabriel Valley and only 14 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The community has over 43,000 residents and enjoys glorious year-round weather and picturesque Southern California scenery. There are numerous natural attractions in the community centered around the breathtaking hiking trails in the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains. The Altadena Library District (ALD) is an independent special district that serves the residents of the unincorporated community of Altadena in Los Angeles County. The Library District is supported by property taxes and governed by five locally elected Board of Library Trustees. It operates on an annual budget of $3.9 million. ALD serves as the hub to the active and engaged community of Altadena. Library Assistant

The District

The Altadena Library District (ALD) is an independent special district that serves the residents of the unincorporated community of Altadena in Los Angeles County. The Library District is supported by property taxes and governed by five locally elected Board of Library Trustees. ALD serves as the hub to the active and engaged community of Altadena. While the local schools are part of the Pasadena Unified School District, ALD serves five public elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school, as well as many private schools within the Altadena community.

The Position

The District is filling a Library Assistant vacancy in our Youth & Family Services Department and want to create an eligibility list for both full and part-time vacancies in the department.

They will provide circulation assistance and collection navigation while working closely with staff in the Youth and Family Services team, including providing suggestions on books and other materials to teachers, families, and children so the knowledge of and ability to evaluate various resources and formats for ages 0 – 12 years is desired.

The Youth and Family Services Library Assistant engages in creative work with and for children and families that includes facilitating and presenting storytimes and other programming both in and out of the library so a background in programming and community outreach is highly desired.  The Altadena Library District provides services and programs to various locations throughout the community and the Library Assistant should be prepared to operate the library vehicle and comply to the ALD Driver Policy during the course of employment.

This person may assist with workshops and training in parenting and early literacy development for parents and caregivers, so knowledge of early literacy skills and general child development is highly preferred.

This Youth & Family Services Library Assistant will be required to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and evenings.

Salary

The current hourly rate for this non-exempt position ranges from $27.35-38.48, negotiable based on qualification and experience.

Benefits (for full-time employees)

Retirement: CalPERS, 2% @ 55 for classic members (employee pays 7% of member share), or 2% @ 62 for new members enrolled as of 01/01/2013 or afterward (employee pays 7.25% of member share).  The District also participates in Social Security.

Vacation Leave: Full-time employees accrue at a rate of 18 days per year for five years, 21 days per year after five years, 23 days per year after nine years, and 28 days after 15 years.  Although accruing leave, new employees are not eligible to use vacation leave during their six-month introductory period.

Holidays: Altadena Library District observes 11 paid holidays per year.  Employees are also granted 1 additional paid holiday wherein date is recommended by administration and approved by the Board of Trustees.

Sick Leave: Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of 1 day per month, or 12 days per year for full-time employees.

Health, Dental and Vision Insurance: The District and the employee share the cost of an employee selected health care plans; District pays up to $1100 per month.

Life Insurance: $15,000 Life Insurance Policy is provided.

Deferred Compensation: Voluntary program available through CalPERS.

Application and Selection Process

All application materials, including completed Altadena Library District application, cover letter, and resume, must be emailed to hr@altadenalibrary.org.  First review of applications will take place on July 16, 2024  and the position will remain open until filled.

Based on a review of the applications, a limited number of the best qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process, which may include a qualifying written examination, structured oral board interview, written exercise, or other elements determined by the District to be appropriate. All applicants invited to the examination(s) will be notified of date, time, and place of examination(s).

Interview dates are to be determined.

The selected candidate will be subjected to a background investigation which may include, but is not limited to, a personal and employment history assessment, criminal history check, and verification of a valid California driver’s license.

In accordance with Federal law, the District will hire only those individuals who are legally authorized to work in the United States. As a condition of employment, you will be required to present proof of your identity and employment eligibility.

Employment Lists shall remain in effect for one year, unless terminated or exhausted.

The Employment List generated from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future vacancies while the List remains active.
