We hope that you are enjoying Summer at Altadena Libraries! Thanks to our amazing patrons, we’ve completed more than 50% of our community goal and there are still a couple of weeks left for us to reach 500,000 minutes!
We also invite you to fill out our Summer at Altadena Libraries survey!
Summer at Altadena Libraries
June 1-August 17, 2024
Our theme this year is Read + Renew + Repeat! And we invite you to indulge your curiosity, explore new interests, and connect with our community at more than 100+ events. We also invite you to join our all ages summer reading/activities challenge.
The Summer Reading/Activities Challenge
Complete the challenge by earning 5 badges (which gets you a completion badge). You can do this either by reading (earn a badge for every 100 minutes you read) or reading and completing activities, all of which you log. Challenge yourself to read up to 500 minutes and help us reach our community reading goal of 500,000 minutes!
In addition to reading, there are four categories of activities you can log: Culinary, Ecology, Explore, and Read. Complete 5 activities in a category to earn a badge! You earn prizes as you go.
Register for the Challenge: earn a reusable tote bag (all participants).
Earn Three (3) Badges: receive a book of your choice for your age level (all participants).
Earn Five (5) Badges (which gets you a Completion Badge):
Children (ages 0-12) receive an Altadena-themed stuffed animal.
Teens (ages 13-17) receive a gift card.
Adults (18+) receive a gift card.
Completion prizes can be picked up starting June 10, 2024. Prizes are available until August 31 (while supplies last).
You can sign up for our summer reading challenge at the Main Library, during the Summer Reading Kickoff event on June 1, or online at AltadenaLibrary.Beanstack.org.
Sign Up for Summer Reading at Our Kickoff Event – June 1!
The easiest way to sign up for our summer reading/activities challenge is to join us at our Summer Reading Kickoff Event, Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Main Library, where you can sign up and enjoy a fun-filled morning of upcycled crafts, airbrush face painting, jumbo games on the lawn, an animal “meet and greet” with Wild Wonders, volunteers from Eaton Canyon, and purchase plants and coffee from La Chula Cafe!
Lunch at the Library This Summer!
We are offering free lunches for kids & teens (ages 0-18) this summer. Lunch will be served:
11:30am – 12:30pm
Monday – Friday, June 3 – August 2, 2024 (except 6/19 & 7/4)
Altadena Main Library Community Room
You do not need to sign-up, show identification, or apply. Lunch will be served on a first come, first-served basis. The library offers these healthy meals — weekly menu here — in partnership with Pasadena Unified School District through the USDA Summer Food Service Program. We hope you will come for healthy lunches, summer reading, and free activities to help young minds and bodies grow and thrive.
This institution is an equal opportunity provider. The Summer Food Service Program is a program of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, administered in California by the California Department of Education. Lunch at the Library is a project of the California State Library, supported with funds from the State of California.
More than 100 Programs This Summer!
We have more than 100 programs scheduled this summer. Pick up a printed catalog at our Main Library or download a digital version here. You can also learn more about our summer events and register for specific programs at www.altadenalibrary.org/programs.
A Case for Summer Reading
Summer reading programs are more important than ever. It is normal in summer months for students to experience “summer slide,” or learning loss, over the break from school. The Altadena Libraries’ Summer Reading Program empowers students to build their literacy skills through encouraging the self-selection of materials and incentives. Eight out of 10 studies show that students who read for fun perform better in school than students who do not. This summer we encourage you to adopt new patterns that can change your life and the lives of your children. Let’s make reading fun this summer!
Teen Volunteers
Teens can also volunteer during the summer for service credit. All new volunteers must fill out our online application. You will receive an email with instructions on how to complete the Teen Volunteer Program Orientation.
Stop by the Teen Space or email us at teens@altadenalibrary.org to learn more about the summer volunteer schedule.
