Travel Through TimeMain Library Reading Court in 1960s
Mid-Century Modern at its Finest

The Altadena Main Library Building, built by famed architect Boyd Georgi in the mid-1960s, transports visitors to a simpler time. The open-concept main floor features a skylight over a cozy reading court, complete with indoor lamp posts and vibrant foliage. Bright colors, minimalistic ornamentation, and an eclectic collection of function-first furniture capture the essence of mid-century modern style, and the Main Library glows like it did when it first opened in 1967 (pictured right).

Our Main Library and its parking lot have been used as a set and location for crew services for shows like CBS’ Criminal Minds, productions for streaming services including Netflix and Hulu, a commercial for Infiniti, and more.

The Altadena Library District prides itself on providing a safe and enjoyable experience to all its patrons, offering an atmosphere conducive to everyone’s right to unimpeded and enjoyable library use. Filming and photography that require the rental use of District property is allowed only following the execution of the Agreement attached to the Filming and Photography Policy, and to the extent that it does not interfere with the delivery of library services and is consistent with the Library’s mission. Staff will make every effort to work with agencies and individuals to determine the most appropriate and reasonable timeframes. This Policy controls for filming and photography where a rental license is required, and in no way abridges any First Amendment rights that would restrict public access.
