Meet The Board of Trustees
Terry Andrues
How long have you served?
I have been on the Board since May 2018.
What’s your role/what committees are you on?
I am on the Community Facilities District Committee, and I am the Government Liaison Officer.
Why do you serve?
I have lived and worked in Altadena since 1978. I have always been interested in ways to make Altadena a better place to live. I am also interested in the County government and how it works.
What drew you into service?
I have always loved libraries and wanted to be involved in improving the Altadena Libraries. I also feel that libraries play a pivotal role in supporting education and literacy in the community. Our library does a great job in both those areas.
What’s your favorite part of being a Trustee?
I like the interaction with the rest of the Board members. I feel that we have a very good group, and it’s wonderful to make progress on our goals.
Where were you born?
Los Angeles
What is something you love about Altadena?
I love the fact that Altadena is a border community to the Angeles National Forest. The line between a teeming urban population and a complete wilderness is very bright here and it makes Altadena feel like a destination—not a place you pass through to get somewhere else. I also love the history of Altadena, which is much richer that most people realize.
What are you currently reading/listening to?
Reading: The Great Influenza by John Barry. It’s about the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 and was written in 2008. It’s a great story of that pandemic and the historic medical research that helped save lives.
Favorite quote?
During his speech at Cambridge to christen the newly established Winston Churchill College, Churchill hoped to live up to that honor, saying: “It’s difficult to graft a new branch on a well-grown tree.”
Favorite Movie quote: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” – Roy Scheider, Jaws
Jason Capell
How long have you served?
3.5 years
What’s your role/what committees are you on?
I currently chair the Ad Hoc Facilities Committee, but in the past, I have served as both the Friends and Foundation liaison, and the Board Secretary.
Why do you serve?
I’ve always believed in public service and volunteer work, and if you’re going to demand accountability of public institutions, you need to be prepared to step into leadership roles when needed. When the library was in crisis 4 years ago, I knew I needed to get involved, and I knew I could help provide the leadership necessary to turn things around.
What drew you into service?
I believe in the critical role public libraries play in our democracy.
What’s your favorite part of being a Trustee?
I love getting to know more about the community than I would have otherwise and knowing that I’m making a difference that will last well beyond my time as a Trustee.
Where were you born?
Waterbury, Connecticut
What is something you love about Altadena?
I absolutely love our environment, diversity, and commitment to community.
What are you currently reading/listening to?
Wow, reading-wise I’m forever a fan of Steinbeck. On the music front, I’m really excited for the new Black Star and bummed I’ll be out of town for the Wu Tang/NAS tour.
Favorite quote? / Favorite movie quote?
“GO! As far as you can, as long as you can” – Anthony Bourdain
Kameelah Wilkerson
How long have you served?
I have served the ALD Board of Trustees since June of 2020.
What’s your role/what committees are you on?
Presently I hold the honor of the Secretary board seat. I am also excited to chair the exciting Ad-Hoc Redistricting Committee and the illuminating Budget Committee.
Why do you serve?
I recently received a text message from a lifelong friend with a preteen. They were pleasantly surprised and delighted to see my photo that was recently put up in the main library. REPRESENTATION is immeasurably powerful.
What drew you into service?
I love Altadena and I love ALD. I grew up walking to the main branch and sitting there for days on end. I decided to serve because it appeared to be a unique and interesting way to get involved and serve an institution that has given myself and my family life!
What’s your favorite part of being a Trustee?
I love the inside access to ALD’s greatness! I love reading the reports and am so impressed by all of the work the staff is doing.
Where were you born?
Born and raised in Altadena Baby!
What is something you love about Altadena?
Altadena is a small town and big city all in one. It has everything you need and a small-town feel. People “know everyone” and are kind to each other.
What are you currently reading/listening to?
I just finished the AMAZING Legendborn by Tracy Deonn for the third time, and I am about to start Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
Favorite quote? / Favorite movie quote?
Apropos, my husband, 5-year-old son and I say to each other often – “Go away, read some books!” from the movie Nacho Libre.
What is something you like to do for fun?
I love physical interaction. I am not naturally athletic, but I find the challenge of athletic activities physically and mentally stimulating. I play co-ed softball, and occasionally kickball and dodgeball. I hike and exercise regularly and two of my 2022 goals are to complete the SoCal Six Pack of Peaks Challenge and the Spartan Race Trifecta!

How long have you served?
I joined the board in December of 2018, and I am running for re-election this November for a second four-year term.
What’s your role/what committees are you on?
I served as Board Secretary, and for several years as Board President. I’ve also rotated at different times through virtually every committee there is. From Bylaws to Strategic Planning, to Facilities to Budget, I love the chance to learn about a different piece of the puzzle with each different committee.
Why do you serve?
I love public libraries. They’ve been hugely important in my own life, and they’re one of our most important civic institutions, genuinely a cornerstone of our democracy. Specifically here in Altadena, our library district serves a unique role that goes beyond what people might think of as a traditional or old-fashioned library. Looking around at the world, it’s easy to be disillusioned, or to think that everything is headed for disaster. But serving on the Board is my tangible, real way of making my community better, and helping my neighbors. It’s tremendously rewarding.
What drew you into service?
Around 2016, like a lot of people, I realized that I had to step up and actually do something for democracy. Voting and marching and contributing just didn’t feel like enough. Coincidentally, around the same time, the library board was melting down publicly, and the more I learned about what was going on, the more I was convinced that somebody should do something. It occurred to me that “somebody” was, actually, me. So, I ran for office for the first time!
What’s your favorite part of being a Trustee?
I love structural change. I think as Trustees we have an obligation to the community now and the community in the future to make sure these libraries can continue to serve them. I think that means putting in place norms and structures and rules that create the future we want to see: one that’s equitable and inclusive and amazing. It’s a lot of nuts-and-bolts work, but I think it’s so rewarding and important (especially because when I joined the board, there was virtually nothing).
Where were you born?
I was born in Lewiston, Idaho, but I moved around a fair bit during my early childhood. I mostly grew up (from fourth grade onwards) in Mobile, Alabama – which means every so often you’ll hear some of those Gulf Coast vowels sneak out, especially if I’m super tired!
What is something you love about Altadena?
I absolutely love our stunning natural surroundings – I’m sure that’s true for a lot of us! Driving home up to the top of Lake Avenue, I’m always struck by our beautiful San Gabriel Mountains. I love spending time on our local trails seeing our wildlife (large and small!), our native plants, and the incredible ecosystems we live alongside.
What are you currently reading/listening to?
On the fiction side, I just finished An Impossible Imposter, the newest installment in Deanna Raybourn’s Veronica Speedwell series about a Victorian-era lady lepidopterist (butterfly scientist) who’s also always solving mysteries. She just can’t help it. If you like a no-nonsense strong female lead who rejects traditional gender norms and loves natural science and also MURDERS (it’s a weird Venn diagram, but hey, I’m in the middle of it!), then Veronica Speedwell is a lady for you. They’re a ton of fun. In nonfiction, I’m reading C. Thi Nguyen’s outstanding Games: Agency as Art, which is a thoughtful exploration of how games are a particular art form that allow us to play with the concept of agency, with what we do and what we value and how we pursue it. Especially as more and more forms of communication – like social media – are gamified, I really appreciate his framing and analysis about how to understand value.
Favorite quote?
My favorite quote is a bit of poetry from Lucille Clifton’s Blessing the Boats (at St. Mary’s): “may the tide / that is entering even now / the lip of our understanding / carry you out / beyond the face of fear” it’s a beautiful poem, and very short, and one that I return to all the time.”

How long have you served?
I have been on the Board of Trustees since December 2022.
What’s your role/what committees are you on?
For 2024, I am on the Budget, and the Community Facilities District Standing Committees.
Why do you serve?
I am an unabashed fan of libraries, and truly believe in their power to help people. I really just wanted to give something back to our community in a tangible manner.
What drew you into service?
My wife and I attend many library programs, especially with our children, and we spend a lot of time chatting with the librarians. The talk usually strays into suggestions for the library or events, and some of them mentioned that there was an open seat on the library board where I could actually do more than ‘talk’ about helping. I started looking into it, but it was really my wife that ‘pushed’ me into it as she felt it was a natural fit.
What’s your favorite part of being a Trustee?
Bringing a different perspective from engineering and science to the board. But honestly, at the end of the day, building relationships with the people that I get to interact with.
Where were you born?
Selangor, Malaysia. It’s a little bit far from here.
What is something you love about Altadena?
I love the peace and quiet, and that it is still close to so many things to do. We really do have a great community with great neighbors.
What are you currently reading/listening to?
I just finished Eight Billion Genies by Charles Soule, the September 2023 pick for the library Drawn Together: Graphic Novel Book Club. The blurb reads, “If you had one wish…what would you wish for? Now, what if everyone else had one wish too?” It makes the cut of books that I would be happy to own and have on my bookshelves.
I’ve also been obsessed with The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the 2013 movie directed by Ben Stiller this past year. I read the original short story by James Thurber thanks to the library, and listen to the soundtrack frequently.
Favorite quote? / Favorite movie quote?
I got a great one sent to me by the universe in a fortune cookie several years ago while on a grueling NASA airborne campaign where a number of things went wrong, “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” I think about that quote a lot.
